It’s National Ice Cream Day and We’re Doing A Taste Test

Today is National Ice Cream Day and it only felt right to celebrate it with not one, but five different ice creams. Chocolate Peanut Butter is a fan favorite here at Rhone, so we decided to put some of the most well-known brands to the test to see who truly came out on top. Rhone’s VP of Retail and ice cream connoisseur, David Benavides volunteered as tribute. Here’s how they all stack up.

You scream, I scream, we all may not definitely scream for the same brands of ice cream.  We are loyal to our ice cream brands as we are our sports team.  Alas, it’s National Ice Cream Day, and a great split is among us.  Brace yourselves for a rocky road ahead as I taste test some of the most popular chocolate peanut butter flavored ice cream.  It’s a spoon-to-spoon competition!  Who will win the coveted Golden Spoon in our Rhone CPB Ice Cream Challenge!

I’ve been eating copious amounts of ice cream since I was a kid, so I like to think of myself as a self-proclaimed ice cream expert.  So, let’s all agree that I’m pretty well versed in what a good ice cream tastes like.  I promise to be a fair and impartial judge today, especially since my Texas favorite, Blue Bell, was not on this list.

Firstly, I wanted to even the scooping field and set some standard questions that I usually ask myself.  First, and most importantly is the ice cream tasty and flavorful? Is the ice cream actually creamy and holds a great consistency?  Is the texture of the cream smooth, velvety, and the blend of ingredients the right proportion?  What’s the chocolate to peanut butter balance? Lastly, and as the retail guy, is the product good enough for me to buy again.

I used a 5 point scale for each of the questions to help make the best rating and determination for our Golden Spoon Winner.  I only had 3 spoonfuls of each ice cream, and ate a palette cleanser and drank water in between flavor.

First up was Serendipity Humble Pie!  This is a peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter swirls, chocolate chunks, and graham pieces.  My, my, my, the creaminess and the flavor! I was immediately tossed into a memory of going to the Serendipity shop as a kid! Now it did have some room for some for balance and texture.  Although it appears to be peanut butter heavy, the chocolate chunks were very prominent and felt like I was eating a chocolate flavored ice cream. I do think this is an item I’m likely to buy again if some of the other favorites were not available.

Next, I went on to Talenti Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup.  Excuse me while I tie my hands down to prevent myself from eating the entire container.  Do they serve this in Heaven? The creaminess, the texture, the balance, were all perfect! While I realize this is technically a gelato, this flavor gets your palette lost in a world of chocolate peanuty butter that you don’t want to leave.  Would I buy this again? I am out the door to go buy more because I don’t want to run out!

For those that are more health conscious, I went on to taste Halo Top Peanut Butter Cup.  Admittedly I was very curious about this brand as I have not bought it before. I noticed that the container seemed less full from the 5 minutes it took me to get from the grocery store to my home. It certainly was not full when I got home it; it just all sat away from the edges of the container.  I guess is a product of the ingredients that make this only have 330 calories.  The flavor of this was ice cream product with a hint of chocolate peanut butter.  The texture and creaminess were great which led me wanting to have more flavor, but alas the flavor was not there.  I wouldn’t buy this product again unless I was on a strict diet that required me to watch my caloric intake.

Van Leewwen Peanut Butter Choc Chip was next.  I wanted to be inclusive to our friends that cannot eat dairy, or prefer a vegan or vegetarian diet.  I’ve never had milk substitute ice cream before so I was unsure what to expect. Admittedly, it wasn’t bad.  The flavor profile was a little interesting, it doesn’t have the “cream’ flavor, the substitute was a little off putting, but the chocolate flavor more than made up for this.  The chocolate definitely overpowered the peanut butter that made this a bit lackluster in the balance and texture department.  I don’t have a need for a vegan or dairy free ice cream, so I personally wouldn’t buy this again, but would recommend it for a vegan replacement, but I’d be curious to see what other milk substitutes are out there.

Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World certainly rocked my world.   I’m typically a fan of Ben & Jerry’s anything; they’ve perfected the flavor profile and creaminess of all the ice creams, and this flavor was no exception.  It did have some room for improvement with the balance and texture. Each one of my three bites had a different flavor profile, albeit all were delicious. This is one ice cream I would most definitely keep my eye out for when I’m walking down the ice cream aisle.

Last but not least I ended our tasting with Haagen Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter.  Spoon one blew my mind.  Spoon two made me wonder if I saved the best for last.  Spoon three almost had me scream “Oh my god” like Janice from the tv show Friends.  I have nothing to say about this ice cream other than you need to out right now and buy this.  Perfectly creamy, the best and most well balances flavor profile, and the texture was perfect.  Most brands throw chunks of ingredients to accomplish flavor, but not Haagen Dazs.  They’ve somehow managed to provide a silky flawless texture on a usually hard ice cream flavor profile.  I may have to run to the store and buy more of this ice cream immediately and share with my friends because everyone should experience the joy of Haagen Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter.

What’s the final scoop?  All are great options, but we do have a tie for our Golden Spoon between Haagen Dazs and Talenti!  I could have eaten the entire container of these flavors, but know I shouldn’t.  Now, I’m going to toss on a pair or our Rhone Versatility Shorts and go run off some of these calories.  Chocolate wishes and peanut butter dreams to everyone.
